Vendors use three overlapping acronyms. Understanding them prevents buying the wrong product β or two products when one would do.
UCaaS β Unified Communications as a Service
Internal and external collaboration for every employee: phone numbers and extensions, voicemail, SMS, team chat and video meetings in one app. Priced per user.
CCaaS β Contact Center as a Service
Tools for dedicated agents handling high volumes: queues, IVR, skills-based routing, dialers, recording, quality management, workforce management and real-time dashboards. Priced per agent, usually higher than UCaaS.
CPaaS β Communications Platform as a Service
APIs for developers to embed SMS, voice, video, WhatsApp and verification into apps and workflows. Priced per usage (per message, per minute).
| You need⦠| Choose |
|---|---|
| A phone system for the whole team | UCaaS |
| 5+ people answering customer calls all day | CCaaS (or UCaaS with CC add-on) |
| Automated texts, OTP codes, app calling | CPaaS |
| All of the above | A vendor offering UCaaS + CCaaS with APIs |
Most growing businesses start with UCaaS and add CCaaS once call volume justifies dedicated agents. Size that moment with our Erlang C staffing calculator.
