Chinese Lucky Numbers: The Complete Guide
Why does a Hong Kong car plate sell for millions, and why do buildings skip the 4th floor? In Chinese, numbers sound like words, and those sounds carry meaning. Here's everything you need to know.
1. Why numbers carry luck
Chinese is rich in homophones: many words share the same syllable and differ only by tone, or not at all. When a number is spoken, listeners hear the words it sounds like. 8 (bā) sounds close to 发 (fā, "prosper"), so it's welcome everywhere. 4 (sì) sounds almost identical to 死 (sǐ, "death"), so it's avoided. This is homophonic numerology, and it shapes real decisions: prices, phone numbers, addresses, dates and gift amounts.
2. Every digit, 0–9
| Digit | Pinyin | Sounds like | Reputation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | líng | 零 / 灵 wholeness, spirit; "you" (你) in slang | Neutral–good |
| 1 | yī / yāo | 一 / 要 first, unity; "want/will" | Neutral |
| 2 | èr | 易 / 双 easy; pairs; "love" in slang | Good |
| 3 | sān | 生 life (Cantonese), but 散 "scatter" in gifts | Good (mixed) |
| 4 | sì | 死 death | Unlucky |
| 5 | wǔ | 我 / 五行 "me"; the Five Elements; Cantonese "not" | Neutral |
| 6 | liù | 溜 / 顺 / 禄 smooth; fortune | Lucky |
| 7 | qī | 起 / 齐 / 妻 rise; together; wife | Mixed |
| 8 | bā | 发 prosper | Luckiest |
| 9 | jiǔ | 久 long-lasting | Lucky |
3. Famous combinations
- 168: 一路发, "prosper all the way". A classic for prices and company names.
- 518: 我要发, "I will prosper".
- 888 and 8888: prosperity multiplied.
- 66: 六六大顺, "everything goes smoothly".
- 520: 我爱你, "I love you". 20 May is China's internet Valentine's Day.
- 1314: 一生一世, "forever". Together they make 5201314.
- 99: 久久, "forever and ever". 999 roses mean eternal love.
- 28: 易发, "easy prosperity", especially in Cantonese.
4. Mandarin vs Cantonese
Most meanings are shared, but a few flip. In Cantonese, 5 (ng) sounds like 唔 "not". 58 is "I prosper" in Mandarin but "won't prosper" in Cantonese, while 54 becomes "won't die", a lucky reading. 3 (saam) sounds like 生 "life", which makes it more positive in Hong Kong. 7 has a vulgar Cantonese homophone, so brands in Hong Kong use it carefully.
