What to do before, during and after
Many authorities use colour-coded warning levels. Learn yours:
🌋 Earthquake
Before: secure heavy furniture and water heaters; identify safe spots under sturdy tables. During: Drop, Cover and Hold On. Stay indoors; keep away from windows. If outside, move to open ground. After: expect aftershocks, check for gas leaks, and near coasts move to high ground if there's long or strong shaking (tsunami risk).
🌊 Flood
Before: know your evacuation route; move valuables up; consider flood insurance. During: never walk or drive through flood water — 15 cm can knock you over, 30 cm can float a car. After: avoid flood water (contamination, live wires); photograph damage for insurance.
🔥 Wildfire / bushfire
Before: clear gutters and a defensible space around the home; pack your go-bag; plan two exits. During: leave early when told — don't wait. Wear long cotton clothing and an N95. After: return only when authorities say it's safe; watch for hot spots.
🌀 Hurricane / cyclone / typhoon
Before: know your zone, shutter windows, fill fuel and water. During: stay in an interior room away from windows; beware the calm eye. After: avoid downed power lines; never run generators indoors (carbon monoxide).
☀️ Extreme heat
Drink water regularly, avoid midday exertion, use fans and cool showers, check on older neighbours, never leave children or pets in cars. Know the signs of heat stroke.
❄️ Winter storm & extreme cold
Stock heating fuel and blankets; keep a car kit (blanket, scraper, snacks); limit time outdoors; recognise hypothermia and frostbite.
🔌 Power outage
Keep torches (not candles), power banks and a battery radio. Keep fridge and freezer closed. Unplug electronics to avoid surges. Plan for anyone who relies on powered medical equipment.
🏠 House fire
Install smoke alarms on every level and test monthly. Plan two ways out of every room and practise. In a fire: get out, stay out, call from outside. Stay low under smoke. If clothes catch fire: stop, drop and roll.
🌊 Tsunami
Natural warnings — strong or long earthquake, sudden sea retreat, a loud ocean roar — mean go to high ground or inland immediately. Don't wait for official warnings and don't go to the shore to watch.
🦠 Pandemic & infectious disease
Keep a 2-week supply of essentials and medicines, follow public-health guidance, keep vaccinations current, and plan for school or work closures.
