How to split a bill fairly
Splitting evenly is fastest when orders are similar. When one person had a steak and another had soup, split by items: each person pays their own items plus an equal share of anything shared (appetizers, a bottle), then tax and tip are applied proportionally so nobody subsidises anybody.
Tip on pre-tax or post-tax?
Etiquette guides generally suggest tipping on the pre-tax subtotal. The difference is small on a single meal — on a $150 bill with 13% tax and 18% tip, it's about $3.51 — but the toggle lets your group choose.
FAQ
Should tax be split evenly?
Tax should follow what each person ordered. Our by-items mode applies tax proportionally, which is the fairest method.
What is a normal tip?
In the US and Canada, 15–20% for table service is typical; 18–20% is common in cities. Many countries include service — check the bill.
