The story behind 000093

Read it aloud in Mandarin: líng líng líng líng jiǔ sān. Here is what each part means in markets, history and number symbolism.

1 · How it's read

零零零零九三 is líng líng líng líng jiǔ sān. In everyday speech people just say the last two digits: 九三 (jiǔ sān), "nine-three". In Chinese dates, 九三 means the third day of the ninth month, so 3 September.

2 · 九三: Victory Day, 3 September

On 3 September 1945, the day after Japan formally signed its surrender, China began celebrating victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. In 2014 China's national legislature made 3 September a formal national commemoration day. The major anniversaries, including the 70th in 2015 and the 80th in 2025, were marked with large ceremonies in Beijing.

The date is so central to modern Chinese memory that a scholarly organisation founded by scientists and academics in 1946 took its name from it. That makes "九三" one of the most recognisable two-digit references in modern China.

Search interest in "九三" peaks every year around early September. That makes it a natural seasonal hook for history, remembrance and education content.

3 · The numerology of 0, 9 and 3

  • 0 · 零 líng. Wholeness and a clean slate. Four zeros give a sense of starting fresh, and in markets they suggest a code, an index, or "ground zero".
  • 9 · 九 jiǔ. Sounds like 久, "long-lasting". Nine is tied to longevity and was traditionally associated with the emperor, which is why it's popular for weddings and anniversaries.
  • 3 · 三 sān. Sounds like 生, "life, birth, growth". It can also sound like 散, "to scatter", so context matters.
  • 93 together. Reads as 久生, "lasting life / enduring growth". That's a positive, forward-looking pairing, and it carries the historic weight of 3 September.

4 · Six digits: the language of Chinese markets

Mainland China identifies every listed stock, fund, bond and index with a six-digit code. For hundreds of millions of retail investors, six-digit numbers are an everyday language. Codes starting with 000 belong to the Shenzhen Main Board range. The same digits also appear in Shanghai-side index numbering and in off-exchange mutual-fund codes. 000093 itself has been used for a tiered bond-fund share class launched in 2013, and in Hong Kong's five-digit system 00093 is a Main Board listing.

5 · Numbers on the Chinese internet

Pinyin is harder to type and remember than digits, so Chinese web users have long favoured numeric domains and numeric slang: 520 (I love you), 666 (awesome), 88 (bye-bye). Big numeric .com sales, and the 2015 wave of investors buying up short numeric domains, show how valuable a short, readable number can be.
