How Chinese number meanings work

Mandarin has only about 400 distinct syllables, so many words sound alike. Digits borrow the meaning of the words they sound like: 8 (bā) ≈ 发 fā “prosper”, 4 (sì) ≈ 死 sǐ “death”, 9 (jiǔ) ≈ 久 jiǔ “long-lasting”. Online, young people string digits into whole sentences — 520 = 我爱你 “I love you”.

The decoder reads your number three ways: exact codes, hidden codes inside longer numbers, and digit-by-digit homophones, then weighs lucky and unlucky patterns into a 0–100 score.

Frequently asked questions

How does the number decoder work?

It checks your number against our dictionary of established Chinese number codes (520, 1314, 3344…), finds codes hidden inside longer numbers, then reads each remaining digit by its most common homophone and gives a cultural luck score.

Can I decode a phone number?

Yes — spaces, dashes and + are ignored. Up to 20 digits.

Why does 4 score so low?

四 (sì) sounds like 死 (sǐ, death). Many Chinese buildings skip 4th and 14th floors, and plates or phone numbers with 4 sell for less.

Is 7 lucky or unlucky?

Both. It reads as 亲 (kiss) or 妻 (wife) in love codes and marks Qixi on 7/7 — but the 7th lunar month is Ghost Month and 748 is an insult. We rate it neutral.

Where do these meanings come from?

Chinese homophones and widely used internet slang. See our meanings guide and editorial standards.
