What numbers mean in Chinese
In Mandarin, numbers are spoken like words, and many sound like other words. That's why 8 is lucky, 4 is avoided, 520 means "I love you", and 111159 reads like 要要要要,我久: "want it all, for good."

Why numbers matter to people and to the economy
- Shopping festivals are built on dates: 11.11 (Singles' Day), 6.18 (mid-year sale), 12.12 and 5.20.
- Prices end in 8 or 9, and gift amounts use 520 or 1314. Red envelopes avoid 4.
- Phone numbers and licence plates with 8s can sell for large premiums at auction.
- Weddings and launches cluster on "lucky" dates such as 8/8. The Beijing Olympics opened at 8:08 pm on 8/8/2008.
- Domains: numeric .com names are easy for Chinese users to type and remember (think 163.com, 58.com, 360.cn, 12306.cn). That is why short numeric domains are prized.
🎁 Tip for global brands: price at ¥88, ¥168 or ¥520 during festivals, avoid 4 in SKUs for Chinese markets, and time launches to 11.11 or 5.20.
